How it works

100 Hymns cover

Help for beginners with basic skills

The 100 Hymns contains very simple arrangements of one hundred out-of-copyright hymn tunes used in Catholic churches. Each hymn consists of melody line, bass line and chord symbols in an easy-to-read key. There are no words, except for the few Latin hymns, so the player would have to use the book in conjunction with his or her usual hymnal. 100 Hymns is fully indexed.

Click for full list of contents and some samples.

Here is a typical setting:

The very simple outline makes the music easy to play in time, which is the most important factor in accompanying hymns. Beginners with only basic knowledge can choose their own level. They can work with melody only (which is quite sufficient to keep the people together), melody and bass line, melody and chords, or chords only (if someone else is singing or playing the tune).

Help for proficient pianists

New organists are invariably faced with the problem of quantity – having to become quickly familiar with a large repertoire of hymns. Even proficient pianists with high grades can find the amount of practice involved daunting. A collection of a hundred easy-to-pick-up tunes is a godsend, as it gives the player leisure to get to know the full music versions.

Also, some hymn books in common use have full music accompaniments which are not designed for the organ, or are inadequate in other ways. Experienced organists modify these as they go along, but this is a skill which a beginner, however proficient, has to learn. Again, 100 Hymns can be a useful stop-gap.

Using 100 Hymns to develop skills

Using this book can help beginners to understand the nature of the organ. The rather bare texture of the settings can be enhanced by using stops and couplers to bring in sounds at different pitches without a single extra note having to be played. More confident beginners can use the single bass line as an introduction to pedalling.

100 Hymns can be a great aid to exploring keyboard harmony. Filling out the notes of the chords, especially in the right hand, will improve the texture and encourage harmonic awareness. This in turn can help with the playing of melody-and-chords versions of in-copyright modern hymns directly from the various hymnals in which they appear.

Who should NOT use 100 Hymns?

  • SATB accompanists. If you have a choir singing the full music version in parts, the simplified harmonies of 100 Hymns could clash.
  • Instrumental group accompanists. Same here, if the instruments are playing in harmony.
  • Experienced organists will not be interested.
Except just occasionally …
One very experienced player, who works for a number of churches with varying types of organ, told Forth in Praise that he uses 100 Hymns because its one-size-fits-all outline allows him to adapt the harmony to the capability of each instrument!

The St Magdalene Gloria

The St Magdalene Christmas Gloria

If you are already singing Eugene Burns's St Magdalene Gloria, then you'll find it easy to substitute the Christmas refrain over the Christmas season. If you don't know it already, then consider learning it as an additional and very easy Gloria which, with its standard refrain, can be used all the year round.

Eugene Burns has kindly allowed us to offer this Gloria as a free download for a limited period. Eventually, Forth in Praise hopes to publish the whole St Magdalene Mass.

Here is the people's part of the
standard St Magdalene Gloria:
